Several readers were incensed last week when we highlighted InfoWorld’s early negative impressions of Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.

InfoWorld’s take was scathing – suggesting that Microsoft should kill the project.

Now Engadget’s Joshua Topolsky has offered his in-depth preview of Windows Phone 7, and he’s also skeptical about the viability of the platform:

What we’ve been presented with here doesn’t exactly feel like a complete mobile operating system in many ways.

On one side, we’re still really excited by the prospect of Metro as a viable, clean-slate approach to the mobile user experience, and there are lots of smart moves being made that could lead to greatness. On the other side, Microsoft has to turn this into a viable retail product that can hang with the fiercest competition in the history of the cellphone in just a few months’ time, and there are some serious issues that need to be addressed. Frankly, it’s a little scary.

By any measure, Microsoft’s got its back against the wall in the mobile game, and becoming competitive quickly is vital to the company’s success — and in that regard, we understand why they’ve been so adamant about getting Windows Phone 7 on shelves in time for Holiday 2010. The thing is, putting out a product that’s half-baked risks alienating early adopters at the worst possible time, especially considering that we see a clear-cut (and pretty painless) path to fixing the most egregious shortcomings. Seriously, if the WP7 team put their heads down and added a clipboard and some rudimentary multitasking, Microsoft could have an exceptionally solid version-one product in Windows Phone 7 — especially when coupled with the company’s fierce outreach to developers.

While Topolsky’s preview uses a lot of negative language, he does see Windows Phone 7’s Zune media player capabilities as one of the platform’s key features:

The Zune integration is rather seamless on Windows Phone 7, allowing you to browse and play what you have in your library, sync music and video back and forth to your PC, and if you have a Zune Pass subscription, you can grab whatever you like (well, almost) right on the phone without hesitation.

In general, we like the combo here, but there were times when the Zune interface was a bit confusing. Sometimes it was hard to know what section of the player you’re in — the line between previewing and listening is very fine here.

That said, we love having almost limitless access to new music on a phone, and the Zune Pass subscription certainly adds that capability, though you’re adding another $14.95 on top of your existing phone bill if you decide to go that route. Ultimately it’s a question of how voracious of a music buyer you are — but something tells us we’re going to see a marked increase in Pass users when these phones hit the market.

For Zune fans, moving to Windows Phone 7 could be a no-brainer.

And, while Windows Phone 7 may seem “half-baked” compared to the standard set by the latest iPhone and Android phones, it will probably fare a lot better in comparisons to current Enterprise phones.

If Microsoft releases Windows Phone 7 before it’s ready for prime time, though, the company risks doing what it did with the Zune – create a brand with baggage.

I've been playing around with the newest addition to Google Docs, Google Drawings, and I'm quite liking it. I tried drawing a few diagrams and even a wireframe, and it turns out the basic drawing interactions are just as good – in some cases even better – than what I'm used to in Omnigraffle and Fireworks.

We need stencils

One thing was missing though: Stencils. Omnigraffle has stencils coming out of its ears, and Fireworks has some excellent built-in ones. But Google Drawings in its current early and simple form simply doesn't have it. So I made one.

Leaving the stencils in the gutter

An interesting limitation is the fact that

there's no stencil library function and
you can't easily copy and paste from one document to another.

One solution, it seems, is to clone one of the wireframe kits and thereby also cloning the stencils into each document. To not print or export the stencils, I've left them in the gutter area of the document. Seems to work quite okay.

Kind of blue

I've been wanting a blue kit since I left a project years ago where we used blue stencils (the idea was Peter's). As you may have experienced, some customers simply don't understand wireframes. The blue color gives that well-known blueprint feel, and shouldn't prompt questions like "I like it, doesn't it need a splash of colour?"

It's time to repeat the parody - don't use the same password for all your login accounts. Once your favorite site is hacked, your password is compromised and you have a world of insecurities to live in. On Twitter's part we can expect them nip the bud for its over 12 million users in US, before its too late. The popular microblogging Web site Twitter was hacked overnight, leaving the millions who use the site tweetless. Those who tried to access Twitter were redirected to a site that had a green flag and proclaimed "This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army." The Web site was down for nearly an hour. Representatives from Twitter could not be immediately reached for comment, but the company spoke about the issue on its official Twitter page. "Twitter's DNS records were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed. We will update with more information soon," the company posted at about 2:30 a.m. ET Friday. It was unclear who the group Iranian Cyber Army was and if it is connected to Iran. However, Twitter has had an interesting relationship with Iran. Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Charlie Starr from Blackberry Smoke tells us about "Up In Smoke" from their brand new album "Little Piece of Dixie" (which received 4.5 stars from antiMusic's Gary Schwind). We now turn it over to Charlie for the story:

"Up In Smoke" was a collaboration between the band and our buddy, Randy Houser. We got together with Randy in Nashville one day for a little picking-writing session. It was pretty evident from the get-go that everyone involved had imbibed just enough liquid refreshment the night before to make even shaking hands a little difficult.

A little "hair of the dog" was immediately administered to lubricate everyone's motor skills, and away we went. The chorus was put together very quickly, and part of the first verse was coming together when the inevitable happened. Laughter took over. I believe it was Randy who started to sing a song from "Revenge Of The Nerds" in the middle of the proceedings, and I guess I quickly followed suit by trying to make
"What you talkin' bout, Willis?" fit into the song somehow. Nevertheless, it was decided that we should take our little midday party to a bar and finish the song later.

The next week I was at home and stumbled across the demo of that hilarious session. I quickly realized that, despite the silliness, I thought it was a really great song. So I sat down in the lazy boy and finished the rest of it. This is probably a "you had to be there" kind of story, but it was a freakin funny experience. I guess that acoustic demo is floating around somewhere. Maybe Randy's got it.

The ballot screen, see above, will be delivered via Windows Update. This means it looks as if Internet Explorer will initially be available after installing Windows 7. Indeed in the screenshot above they say…

What this means for people who use Windows 7 is that, at some point shortly after you begin using it you will be asked to choose which internet browser you would like to use. You may decide to choose Internet Explorer, and my guess is most people will, in which case it will switch it back on. However you may choose to opt for the also excellent Firefox or the minimalist Chrome.

The ballot feature a choice of 12 browsers; browsers are listed alphabetically by vendor, and are sorted into groups according to their popularity. Microsoft provides introductory information for each option. You can see a screen shot of the ballot screen here.

Microsoft (MSFT) was equally upbeat on the EC's decision. "We welcome today's announcement by the European Commission to move forward with formal market testing of Microsoft's proposal relating to web browser choice in Europe," General Counsel Brad Smith said in a statement. "We also welcome the opportunity to take the next step in the process regarding our proposal to promote interoperability with a broad range of our products."

There were, however, a few that were not so welcoming of the move. Top among them, ECIS, an industry group whose members include Oracle (ORCL), Sun (JAVA), IBM (IBM) and Nokia (NOK). "ECIS notes that the settlement does not appear to deal with the inadequacies of Microsoft's standards compliance, unfair pricing practices or other concerns related to patent abuse or standards manipulation," the group said in a statement.

Google's new logo is a barcode which, as far as we can tell, says "Google." Today is the 57th anniversary of the first patent on the bar code. Inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver filed the patent on October 1949, and it was granted, No. 2,612,994 (pdf), on October 7, 1952. The original patent was for a system that would encode data in circles (a bulls eye pattern), so that it could be scanned in any direction.

The barcode on the Google homepage is Code 128 encoded, which is a standard way of encoding ASCII character strings (ie. A-Z, a-z, 0-9, etc.) into a barcode. It would be safe to assume that Google used their own open source barcode project

Review: Retro-bit configuration awesome phones

PSP Why? No one cares about that old thing. Honestly, do you want to carry around another heavy, and fragile, state-of-play in art? No. What you need (what this country needs) is a little cheap Genesis 20 of his sports a semi-greatest hits. There is no need to worry about version management, and digital rights management, and firmware updates, or lightness of transport - just hit the power button and you'll be playing changed beast or Sonic & Knuckles before you can say "Segaaaa!"

It's fully licensed device a bit, and this means you will not play Revenge of the Shinogi Eco, or porpoise. These are real games. The device itself from what is cheap as you would expect $ 50, but it runs everything well and comfortable and responsive controls. On the screen is bright and sharp, although it seems that there is some overlap effect. The sound is loud and clear with little deviations (not bass). It comes with a cable for vehicles as well as, associated with the enclave, such as MPro 120, means you've got Genesis the big screen in your bag wherever you go, they have provided enough of the dark. I can not speak to battery life, but I think it's good, considering how little the device needs to be done. It takes the American Association.

(Update: I am if it were me, with the enclave, in a ceremony last night and he had been beaten. You have to be careful, however, is very nerdy to do)

My system came with an error in the part of the screen, which include, but are not very clear during gameplay. Since mine is a free and Review Unit in any case, I'm not going to buck - I'm sure they want it to replace you in early if they were a matter of this kind.

This issue, however, is whether you want to lock yourself in the game and the system presented here, or pay another $ 50 and pick up what looks like Dingoo? It is up to you, but the simplicity of this system is a little point of sale, as well as weak - and its limits, it does not attempt anything that can not do that, nor Dingoo (and the Neo Geo and SNES] performance is spotty).

This could be it folks, the day quite a few of us (including me!) have been waiting for. Yes, a chance for RIM to make up for its errors and hopefully right the touch-screen smartphone ship.
Indeed, a possible release date, or at the very least, a day around when RIM will be releasing the BlackBerry Storm 2, its new incarnation that has captured the hearts and minds of BlackBerry lovers everywhere.
Ok, that was a little cheesy.
Boy Genius Report has apparently caught wind of a Best Buy inventory listing that shows the store receiving dummy units of the new touch-screen phone on October 25th. What that means is that the actual retail phone will be hitting the store and Verizon, a little bit before or after that date.
While this certainly is far from confirmed, it gives a glimmer of closure to a phone that has been revealed in video multiple times and was rumored to have an imminent release.
Of course, hopefully once released, it doesn’t disappoint like the last one.

Unlike other iPhone updates I've installed via iTunes, this one is actually very quick. Very quick. On the other hand, you do have to hard reset the iPhone to enable it. Once it's rebooted, which takes more time than booting a PC, you can use the standard Messages app to send one or more photos with a text message. You'll see the following new toolbar above the virtual keyboard:

Photos have to be added one at a time, which is no big deal. (But I wish Apple would drop the awful iChat-like "thought bubble" UI in this SMS/MMS app. It's just childish looking.)
Needless to say, this being Apple and AT&T, the complaints have already begun rolling in. I'm sure they'll get it right eventually.

Fast Flip, Google's hardly secret visual news search product, just made its debut today. It's a premiere that tells us lots about the swirling winds in which the company now finds itself. It also marks two important milestones, one about the slow replacement of news search 1.0 and one about Google's willingness to share its ad revenues with news publishers.

First off, Google search, web search and news search, has been good enough to become and remain the standard for almost a decade. That decade's almost over, though, and we can see news search 1.0 about to fade into history. Cooler than cool was the ability to bring together 4300 or so global news sources into a single interface, with reasonable relevance. The 1.0 experience though has been so list-like, so redundant and duplicative and so lacking clarity as to original source. It's ready to pass on, but needs a few pushes. Bing with its mouse-over capabilities provides on push. The news visualization of Newser provides another. Politico's mobile app operates smartly on the same principle. Overall, give credit to Apple's cover-flow presentation, which is now flowing from music to the rest of the online world, as Apple itself made it part of the new Safari.

We're visual creatures and we like to use the web to scan, not just read lists, and text.

So Fast Flip as a product, as an experience, does that. As Google will tell you, Sergey Brin has long complained about how long it takes news pages too load. Fast Flip -- on a reader level -- is one attempt to deal with that issue. The news reading experience online, we've all known, isn't what it could be.

What Fast Flip does then is give us a quick view of the news -- by individual title, by topics, by recommendations -- so that we can scan and zone in on what we want, then click off to it. That's very Google News search-like, but with pictures. So far, more than three dozen publishers are signed up. Google went to top newspapers (the New York Times, the Washington Post), top magazines (Business Week, Elle, Popular Mechanics), top broadcasters (BBC News, Frontline), top web-only sites (Techcrunch, Slate, Salon, Daily Beast) and intriguingly three of top independent investigative sites (Center for Investigative Reporting, Pro Publica, Center for Public Integrity). All the companies represented have opted to be part of the program -- they are essentially licensing content to Google.

For publishers, it's a test, one of many at this point.

"We're trying to find out how users relate to a visual interface," Martin Nisenholtz, senior vice president of digital operations at the New York Times told me, when I asked what was most important about the Fast Flip. "It's purely a research project." Maybe, just maybe, visual search can take readers beyond the news search 1.0 world that Martin describes, "where everything seems to be generic and the algorithm rules." Visual search allows for a "brand presence," something that high-quality news producers have been seeking to reclaim in the digital wilderness.

The company plans to add more, but within the bounds of "keeping it manageable."

It's a smart list, a good mix of older and newer media.

Scan the screenshots, which Google picks up both by RSS feeds and by the use of its crawler, and you can see pages or parts of then. You can't click on any "link" within the screenshot, of course; clicking takes you to that publisher's page, their own url. It's just another way to browse/search, accessed through Google Labs to search with a link planned from Google News itself, but not yet in place. Fast Flip is available for mobile as well, but only for the iPhone and Android-powered phones. No app through any store; access it through the mobile browser.

Coming, if Fast Flip is a hit: Google will license the technology for use by publishers on their own websites.

What the visual test may be cool, it is the business model that may have greater impact.

Google is providing participating publishers with majority of ad revenues earned on the Fast Flip pages. Those are pages hosted on Google.com. Sure, we may say, Google had to do that. In using screenshots of the pages, it is using the intellectual property of the publishers, beyond any reasonable "fair use" argument. That's true, but it's also the first time in a current news product (News Archive possibly) that I can think of that individual publishers -- unlike the wires of AP, AFP, CP and PA -- got ad revenue shares from the use of their content on Google itself. (It's worth noting that because of those pre-existing wire licensing relationships, Google users clicking on AP and AFP screenshots will land on a Google.com hosted page with that content).

Some of us have been making the argument (Content Bridges: Google and Newspapers: Fairplay, Fair Share and "Fair Use") that a "Fair Share" rationalizing of the Google/newspaper relationship is needed. That new deal would involve Google sharing ad revenue -- earned on Google News and Google.com more generally -- when news content spurred Google usage.

My sense: Though this is an experiment -- a six-month one, according to Nisenholtz -- in visual news search, it's also a step forward in Google and the news industry coming to a new financial relationship on text as well.

The financial impact of Fast Flip won't be great -- remember it is still in Labs and much of the public may not happen on it for awhile. Still, the principle is one worth marking.

Back, lastly, to Google in the larger landscape.

Take the business landscape. With half the newspaper industry allied with Yahoo (and thus arch-enemy, Microsoft) through the Newspaper Consortium, it needs to redouble efforts to play well and become a better partner with news companies.

Further, it needs to find the kind of success it has found with search and paid search -- dominant #1 player in both -- in news search. Check out the latest Nielsen news numbers for August, and we find Google able to say, "We're #9!" Hardly a grade it is used to getting. In uniques, Google has moved up 22% year over year. That has plugged it into the ninth spot, moving up from the teens.

Still it is way behind Yahoo News, MSNBC, and AOL. It needs a better news mousetrap.

On the political landscape, it needs to continue making nice. Christine Varney has revitalized the Justice Department's Anti-Trust Division. Google's books deal and general search/paid search dominance have put a big target on its back. At times like these, it is good to have friends, and who could ask for better friends than those with printing presses?

Microsoft Deal with Yahoo! Looks To Next Generation

Microsoft (MSFT) has talked about using it Bing search engine to search the internet “real time” to pick up Twitter messages and other information and data that rockets across the web nano-second by nano-second.

In theory , mappingthe web as it evolves may be nearly as valuable as indexing old pages which is what search engines have done for years.

Wall St. has assumed that Yahoo! (YHOO) would stop devoting resource to search technology now that it will use Bing for its search functions. Yahoo! is making clear that is not true, even as the ink on its deal with Microsoft is still in the process of drying.

According toReuters, Yahoo’s Prabhakar Raghavan, head of Yahoo Labs, said that the company could potentially “mine” messages from Twitter, the popular microblogging service, to offer Web surfers search results beyond those offered by Microsoft’s Bing.

Yahoo! may have decided that it does not want to leave its entire fate in the search business to its ten-year alliance with Redmond. The portal company has to contend with the fact that market leader Google (GOOG) will continue to improve its product. It may even be able to increase its 65% market share in the US. Google still has the opportunity to add features to its core search features and those improvements could bring it even more customers.

Yahoo!’s concern now must be that even if it can bring new search features to market, they may not be ones that the market cares about.

There is no clear indication that consumers or business care about what goes on across the internet “real time”. Twitter messages, texting, figures that are transmitted from point-to-point without analysis may be so much “space junk” circling the world of the valuable data the Google delivers with its basic product. Koogle Search Engine For Israelis

A new ‘kosher’ search engine called Koogle has been launched for orthodox Jews living in Israel, which will allow them to surf cyberspace without ever encountering unbecoming images or faith wavering text and keep the dangers of subversion and temptation at bay. Koogle will follow the religious standards set by the rabbis and is aimed at helping orthodox Jews stay on the stipulated path.

Apparently a jibe at Google, Koogle will filter out forbidden material and provide its consumers kosher bits and pieces from the net.

The search engine links to Israeli news and shopping sites but the results are filtered to exclude items deemed unsuitable.

“This is a kosher alternative for ultra-Orthodox Jews so that they may surf the Internet,” Yossi Altman told Reuters, Jerusalem. “The site was developed in part at the encouragement of rabbis who sought a solution to the needs of ultra-Orthodox Jews to browse the Web particularly for vital services,” he added.
